MIAMI – The Coast Guard is encouraging boaters Thursday to prepare for severe weather due to a developing tropical wave, Invest 99L, which is expected to impact South Florida at the beginning of the weekend. Station New London received a call just before 8:30 p.m., from New London Dispatch of a woman in the water near Groton on the Thames River. NEW YORK — Crewmembers from Coast Guard Station East Moriches rescued four people in distress in Moriches Inlet, Long Island, New York,Wednesday. At approximately 5:30 p.m., crewmembers aboard a Station East Moriches 29-foot Response Boat-Small (RB-S) came upon a capsized 15-foot vessel with four people in the water, who were not wearing life jackets.  The rescue crew safely brought the four distressed boaters aboard the RB-S and brought them back to Station East Moriches with no medical concerns.... WARRENTON, Ore. — A Coast Guard boat crew rescued two men after their 14-foot boat ran aground and began taking on water near Desdemona Sands at the mouth of the Columbia River Tuesday. WASHINGTON — The U.S. Coast Guard announced Tuesday the publication of the final rule concerning Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) reader requirements. The rule requires owners and operators of certain vessels and facilities regulated by the Coast Guard to conduct electronic inspections of TWICs as an access control measure. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The Unified Command is continuing salvage operations at Pier 15 in San Juan Harbor. The Unified Command is establishing mechanical ventilation to circulate air through the vessel. A marine chemist will certify the vessel is safe for entry by personnel facilitating the overhaul of the vessel, removal of cargo and continuing salvage operations. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Coast Guard determined Monday that an earlier report of a missing swimmer was a false alert and have since suspended search efforts near New Smyrna Beach. LOS ANGELES — Following a recent incident involving a laser strike of a Coast Guard member in Morro Bay, the Coast Guard is reminding the public of the significant hazards caused by laser strikes. In this particular case, a laser was pointed from an inspected small passenger vessel in the direction of a Motor Lifeboat from Coast Guard Station Morro Bay and struck a Coast Guard crew member in the eye.
