MIAMI – The Coast Guard is encouraging boaters Thursday to prepare for severe weather due to a developing tropical wave, Invest 99L, which is expected to impact South Florida at the beginning of the weekend.
The National Hurricane Center reports the disturbance is favorable for tropical development, resulting in a minimum of heavy rains and gusty winds. NEW LONDON, Conn. — A Coast Guard Station New London boatcrew rescued a woman in the water near Groton, Connecticut, Wednesday night.
Station New London received a call just before 8:30 p.m., from New London Dispatch of a woman in the water near Groton on the Thames River.
A boatcrew arrived on scene and safely rescued the woman from the water, transporting her to Station New London for medical evaluation.... [Read More]

Florida Fish and Wildlife received a report that the man was discovered to be safe in his home.

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard and local agencies are searching for a person in the water at Navarre Beach, Florida, August 24, 2016.
Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a report at approximately 10 p.m. that Mitchel Overcash, a 31-year-old Caucasian male, last seen wearing brown shorts, fell off a boat in Navarre Sound east of the Navarre Bridge.

NEW YORK — Crewmembers from Coast Guard Station East Moriches rescued four people in distress in Moriches Inlet, Long Island, New York,Wednesday.
At approximately 5:30 p.m., crewmembers aboard a Station East Moriches 29-foot Response Boat-Small (RB-S) came upon a capsized 15-foot vessel with four people in the water, who were not wearing life jackets.
The rescue crew safely brought the four distressed boaters aboard the RB-S and brought them back to Station East Moriches with no medical concerns.... [Read More]

WARRENTON, Ore. — A Coast Guard boat crew rescued two men after their 14-foot boat ran aground and began taking on water near Desdemona Sands at the mouth of the Columbia River Tuesday.
A 29-foot Response Boat-Small crew from Station Cape Disappointment pulled the two men from their sinking boat minutes before it capsized using an emergency heaving line and took them to Skipanon Marina in Warrenton with no reported injuries.... [Read More]

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Coast Guard announced Tuesday the publication of the final rule concerning Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) reader requirements.
The rule requires owners and operators of certain vessels and facilities regulated by the Coast Guard to conduct electronic inspections of TWICs as an access control measure. The final rule also implements recordkeeping requirements and security plan amendments that will incorporate these requirements.... [Read More]

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The Unified Command is continuing salvage operations at Pier 15 in San Juan Harbor.
The Unified Command is establishing mechanical ventilation to circulate air through the vessel. A marine chemist will certify the vessel is safe for entry by personnel facilitating the overhaul of the vessel, removal of cargo and continuing salvage operations.
Ardent, the responding salvage company, is developing a heavy weather mooring plan for the vessel.... [Read More]

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Coast Guard determined Monday that an earlier report of a missing swimmer was a false alert and have since suspended search efforts near New Smyrna Beach.
Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville watchstanders were notified at 8 a.m. Monday by a family friend that Timothy Akins was seen in a store Sunday at approximately 8 p.m.
Coast Guard crews from Station Ponce de Leon and Air Station Clearwater participated in the search.

LOS ANGELES — Following a recent incident involving a laser strike of a Coast Guard member in Morro Bay, the Coast Guard is reminding the public of the significant hazards caused by laser strikes. In this particular case, a laser was pointed from an inspected small passenger vessel in the direction of a Motor Lifeboat from Coast Guard Station Morro Bay and struck a Coast Guard crew member in the eye.

HOBUCKEN, N.C. — The Coast Guard medevaced a man Monday off a fishing vessel near Hobucken.
Station Hobucken watchstanders were notified at approximately 1 a.m. Monday that the captain of the fishing vessel Master Joseph, homeported out of Bayboro, was reportedly disoriented and had temporarily lost consciousness.
