UPDATE 10: Coast Guard continues Baton Rouge flooding response

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard rescued an additional 12 people and assisted other agencies in rescuing another 34 in distress due to flooding in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, area Monday night.

At approximately 8 p.m., Monday, the air crew of an MH-65 helicopter from Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile, Alabama, was diverted to rescue a family of three, including a five-day-old infant having respiratory complications, who were trapped in their car on a highway surrounded by water in Livingston Parish. They were hoisted to North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, Louisiana, to receive immediate medical care for the infant. The Coast Guard received a report shortly after that the infant was in stable condition.

Coast Guard crews, under the coordination of Coast Guard Sector New Orleans, are operating in support of the state of Louisiana, the Governor’s office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness and the Louisiana National Guard.

Coast Guard crews to date have rescued a total of more than 207 people, assisted a total of more than 2,936 people in distress and rescued 28 pets.
