Good Samaritan rescues man off Galveston, Texas

September 29, 2016

HOUSTON — A good Samaritan rescued a 70-year-old man after his Hobie Cat sailboat capsized with he and his son aboard about one mile off Sunny Beach in Galveston, Thursday afternoon.

At approximately 3 p.m., a good Samaritan contacted Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders and reported watching the sailboat capsize and seeing the man swimming toward shore. The son was able to right the boat, but his father was already out of sight.

Watchstanders launched a Station Galveston 45-foot response boat crew and an Air Station Houston MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter air crew while Galveston Beach Patrol and the Galveston Police Department also searched.

At about 4:40 p.m. the same good Samaritan that had made the initial report found the man in the water about a mile from where the sailboat had capsized. The man was transferred to the Station Galveston response boat and taken to Coast Guard Station Galveston. His son was taken to meet back with his father by Galveston police.

Neither of the men were injured and both were wearing lifejackets.
